Famous American historian Stephen E. Ambrose, who wrote World War II-themed works such as D-Day, Citizen Soldiers, Pegasus Bridge and more than 25 history books such as Eisenhower and Nixon biographies, wrote about the American 101st Airborne Division, 506th Division in 1992. He wrote Band of Brothers, which tells the story of the Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Easy Company in the Second World War. This work, built on Ambrose's personal interviews with veterans of the company, letters and diaries, long topped the bestseller lists in the United States and other countries where it was translated. So much so that Brothers Squad, which was adapted for TV with the same name in 2001 and executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, thus became the source of the most watched war series of all time.
American 101 on the impact made in the Allied world by the rapid capture of airfields, strategically important bridges and fortifications by German paratroopers in the operations in Norway and the Netherlands, as an important element of the Blitz War doctrine, and their occupation of the island of Crete alone, without the help of any other class. The 10th Airborne Division was activated on 15 August 1942. William C. Lee, the division's first commander, stated in General Order No. 5, issued on August 19, 1942: “Due to the nature of our weapons and tactics, which we will apply flawlessly, we will be called upon to carry out operations of great importance and will always be required to carry out operations of great importance.” "We will engage in battle when it is most urgent and at its highest."
The later years of the Second World War proved how accurate these words were for the sake of unity. The 101st Airborne Division opened a parachute to German-occupied Normandy in the first hours of the landing, with a key role in terms of the authority of the landing, such as securing the transit routes of the troops that would land on the beach, creating chaos behind the front, and preventing the Germans from concentrating their forces on the beach by cutting off their supply routes. Easy Company, which achieved successes such as the Brécourt Manor attack in Normandy, some of which are still taught in American military schools today, was followed by the largest airborne operation in history up to that time, which was carried out in the Netherlands between 17-25 September and was defeated by the Allies. He participated in the Market-Garden Operation, which ended in defeat. Subsequently, he gained fame as part of the 101st Airborne Division, with his defense of the strategic city of Bastogne under harsh winter conditions during the Ardennes Operation, which was Hitler's last offensive of the war, in which German forces broke through American lines and suffered the greatest losses in the history of the American military. The unit, which later entered Germany and witnessed the horror of the Nazi concentration camps by liberating one of the concentration camps of the Dachau complex, also became the first unit to enter the Eagle's Nest, Hitler's famous residence in the Bavarian Alps.
The book in your hand presents the story of Easy Company, generally known in our country with the TV series Kardeşler Team, to the Turkish reader from its original source, which is the basis of the series. Written sometimes from the soldiers' own words, sometimes from diaries and similar primary sources, this work, with its fluent and sincere language, opens the reader to a breathtaking adventure from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, as if he were among the soldiers.
