Böcek is one of the most important novels of Erhan Bener, one of the masters of Turkish literature, that has been adapted to the big screen.
This striking novel by Bener, who builds his works with unique psychological analyses, draws attention with its main character being a "policeman" and its subject never losing its currency.
The police figure must be one of the most difficult characters to deal with in literature. Bener handles the general perception between the hero and the enemy in a very balanced way, creating a profound fiction that allows all kinds of perspectives. Böcek successfully expresses all the psychology and dilemmas of a cleanliness-obsessed police officer who begins to see everyone around him as an insect.
In these days when no intermediate color between black and white is tolerated and sentences usually begin with "But that too...", Erhan Bener reminds us of humanism through a police officer.
"He squeezes the medicine package under his arm. If he had enough medicine, he would clean out all the insects in this city. Not just the cockroaches. All the creatures that are no different from cockroaches. That Custodian, that doctor, that Hasmet whore, that drunken pimp who will be the father-in-law, those girls in blue jeans, that dirty beard." The boys, the kids sledding on the street, all of them."
