The 1724 Treaty of Istanbul, which is the subject of this work, is a diplomatic document that has never been seen before in Ottoman history. Because with this treaty, a Muslim state (Ottoman) and a Christian state (Russia) made an alliance and shared the lands of another Muslim state (Iran) on the map. In a way, this division reminds us of the division of the Middle East by western powers in the early 20th century with border lines running in straight lines. Indeed, the borders established in the Caucasus by the agreement in question consisted of straight lines.
The period is the Tulip Era. Peace supporter Sultan III in Istanbul. Ahmed and his son-in-law Nevşehirli İbrahim Pasha are in power, while Tsar Peter I, who has expansionist ambitions in Russia, is in power. Developments related to the internal turmoil in the Safavid State of Iran brought these two powers face to face in the Caucasus. While we were on the verge of war, an agreement was made with the mediation of France. This treaty not only divided the Caucasus into zones of influence, but also the Russian presence on the Caspian Sea coast was officially recognized by the Ottoman Empire.
In this book, it is possible to find the strategies of the Ottoman Empire and Russia towards the Caucasus, the expansionist ambitions of Tsar Peter, diplomatic relations between the two states, all the details of the peace negotiations, the content of the treaty and its implementation process.
