Captain's Daughter

The focus of the plot is a major peasant uprising that broke out in 1773 under the leadership of Pugachev.
The rebel peasant leader named Emelyan Pugachev took over the Don and Ural Cossacks and defeated the Tsar's army of 25 thousand people sent against him. At the head of an irregular people's army, he marches from the countryside to the cities, besieges many cities, reaches the gates of Moscow, and reaches a power that will shake the foundations of the tsarism.
While describing such an active period of uprising, Pushkin avoids formal sharpness and combines the revolutionary essence with a competent artistic composition. Thanks to this artistic skill, he conveys his deep revolutionary criticism to the masses in the simplest and most concise way. In this respect, 'The Captain's Daughter' is a bright example of how the strict censorship of the Tsardom was rendered ineffective in Russian Literature.
