Carol - The Price of Salt
The life of Therese, an ordinary shop assistant in a New York department store, suddenly changes direction when she meets the attractive and wealthy Carol. The two women are seemingly complete opposites: Therese is a nineteen-year-old young woman who takes seasonal jobs to supplement her income and continues her relationship with a man she does not love; Carol is a cultured suburban woman on the verge of a divorce from her rich husband, tired of her life in a palatial home. Although they try to escape, the strict society of mid-century America follows them. Will Therese and Carol be able to protect their happiness?
The novel, which was rejected by many publishers in 1952, when homosexuality was a taboo, was finally published with the signature of Claire Morgan and the title The Price of Salt. Readers who embraced the book, which overturned all expectations, also bombarded the daring author with letters. Finally published in 1984 by Patricia Highsmith under her own name Carol, the novel, which was recently adapted for the big screen, is now one of the cult masterpieces of the 20th century.
