Caucasian
Ahmet Mithat Efendi deals with the Caucasian geography in this historical novel. In the preface of the novel, he says that he started writing Caucasus in order to show the development of the freedom struggle in the Caucasus with the emotions aroused in him by the recent rebellion of the people of the region against Russia. It also provides the reader with information about the culture and history of people living in the Caucasus, such as Georgians, Circassians, Abaza, and Adyghes.
In the novel, the Caucasian geography is based on the relationship between Kaplan Bey and Katerina dö Branoviç. The events that took place are discussed. The person at the center of the story is Timurtaszade Kaplan Bey. Kaplan Bey, who fell in love with Katerina, the daughter of the Dö Brano family in the first chapters of Caucasus, is presented in the later parts of the novel as the pioneer of the rebellion against the Russians and as an Abaza lord whose heart beats with the love of the homeland.
In this Caucasian prose, the meanings of each word that may be considered foreign to today's readers are shown in the footnotes, and where appropriate, explanations are given about concepts, people and places related to the cultures of the region.
