This work is concerned with the surviving mythology of the people of the Atlantic coast of north-west Europe, collectively known as the Celts - Irish, Welsh, Scots, Manx, Cornish and Breton. The book begins by briefly considering the what and why of myths in general. It then considers who the Ancient Celts were, who lived in Britain and Ireland before the Romans arrived, and the nature of the society in which they lived. The final section is concerned with storytelling in general, and how and in what form the mythological stories that emerged in pre-Christian culture as part of the oral tradition survived the conversion to Christianity and have come down to us in modern times.
This book is about stories and storytelling, this world and the next. The stories can be heartbreaking, romantic, moving or comical, or sometimes some combination of these. They can be magical or brutally realistic, epic in scale or deeply personal, full of symbolism and allusion or completely straightforward, brilliantly realised works of literature or occasionally invented nonsense.
The world was a very different place when these stories were told by bards and storytellers, and we will probably never fully understand all of the hidden meanings and implications they contain, but even so, they may still have relevance to the world we live in. Like all great art, Celtic myths are fundamentally about what it is like to be human, and while other things may change, this is something that remains largely the same.
