Chained Tenses Chained Words
In order to prepare for the new century and to help the new century be different, I, as an individual and a writer living among various languages, cultures, countries and worlds, wanted to do some things within my means. One of the "things" I did was an essay I wrote called Chained Times. In 1999, the city of Weimar was to become the European capital of culture, and the cultural institutions of the city, together with the multilingual Lettre International magazine, asked many writers, including me, to write an essay on this subject, asking their opinions about what the new century should be like. Chained Times was written on this occasion, but the essay also became a brief summary of my hopeful thoughts and feelings about the new century.
