Stefan Zweig is one of the rare writers who has used a wide range of psychology in his works. The basis of his deserved reputation as a biographer in world literature lies in this feature, that is, being a very master psychologist as well as being a writer.

Chess is a story in which Zweig fully puts his psychological knowledge into play, and the main characters of this story are exhibited entirely in the way the author deals with the people he deals with in his biographies.

When Zweig wrote Chess, one of the few prose texts he completed just before his death, he was living in Brazil, where he emigrated with his wife, Lotte Zweig. In Chess, he chose a cruise ship going from New York to Buenos Aires as the scene of the crime. Three people meet on this ship completely by chance: the new world chess champion Mirko Czentovic, the narrator who is an ordinary chess player, and Dr. B. are the actors of the story.
