Children at the End of the World
The book, of which Yaşar Kemal said, "If I had written a very good novel, I would not have loved it so much", is now available to the readers with a special edition titled 'Children Are Human' by Yapı Kredi Publications... In 1975, Ara Güler's photographs and Turhan Selçuk's photographs appeared in the Cumhuriyet newspaper. This series of interviews, which was published with drawings by U.S. and published as a book under the name Soldiers of Allah in 1978, is now published in its original presentation in the newspaper. Children Are Human Beings, which is Yapı Kredi Publications' 4000th title book, tells the story of little people growing up with pain in our world full of war, hunger and poverty, and the great burdens on their little shoulders.
Yapı Kredi Publications has achieved an important success for Türkiye by reaching its 4000th book in the number of titles today. Yapı Kredi Publications, with its publishing activities focusing on fields such as literature, poetry, philosophy, art, history, city monographs and children's literature; Our Art World fills an important gap in the fields of art, philosophy, literature and comics with its Cogito and Kitap-lık magazines. Yapı Kredi Publications, whose 2000th title book is Ibn Battuta Travelogue and whose 3000th title book is Kazım Karabekir's Diaries, has chosen the great master Yaşar Kemal's Children Are Human Beings as its 4000th title book.
Yaşar Kemal talked about the street children of Istanbul in a series of interviews in 1975. These children had tales under the walls, in the mud, in the dark streets. In the fairy tale of the children who said to the Grand Master, "Uncle Yaşar, darkness is coming," a revolution was expected that would bring 'child-adult equality' and save them. 38 years have passed. Türkiye, Istanbul, all the streets changed, but the street children who did not receive the revolution they were waiting for always remained there and their numbers increased. As the great master said, "Those children are left at the end of the world"...
Children Are Human, published for the first time in accordance with its serialization in the newspaper and with Turhan Selçuk's drawings and Ara Güler's photographs that can be found in the archive, brings together interviews that could only be written with the foresight and intuition of a very master writer. This special edition, which is the 4000th title book of Yapı Kredi Publications, also includes Kemal Özer's interview with Yaşar Kemal, "Why are children human?", published in Cumhuriyet newspaper on September 13, 1975. Also included is an interview titled.
A human being takes up as much space in the universe as his heart, not his body.
This book, which brought together Kemal's interviews with street children in the 1970s, was an important example as it showed what a striking literary genre the interview was... Shoe painters, pickpockets, thieves, murderers, smugglers, those living in mud under the walls, those who fear even their own shadow and those who are brave; This was a sad and shocking book in which great poverty, rejection and alienation shined like a mirror. Another image of Istanbul stretching from Florya to Balat, from Sirkeci to Dolapdere. Lives sealed to never be forgotten, from the pen of Yaşar Kemal, with Zilo, Selim, Muhterem Çoktaş and many more...
So, what importance would these stories have in a society that kills a thousand fish to catch one fish and does not hesitate to burn entire forests for a tiny piece of land? As Kemal Özer stated in an interview with him, Yaşar Kemal believes that even in this society, these children can be saved. All these children, who believe that a "revolution" will save them and who think that the "revolution" is the "equality of children and adults", are, in the words of the master, "men as serious as we are".
In Kemal Özer's interview with Yaşar Kemal in Cumhuriyet Newspaper in 1975, Yaşar Kemal describes an event he experienced as follows: "One evening, I am walking up from Menekşe. Menekşe is a slum neighborhood near my house. A boy comes from the other side, around the age of five. Suddenly, he comes to me. He came and said, 'Run away, Uncle Yaşar.' 'Why should I run away?' I said, 'How many darknesses are coming together?' The child lives mostly in dreams. Because his experiences are few, he turns his longings into reality, into dreams. And I am so happy with what I have written, for example, if I had written a very good novel. I wouldn't be happy, because it seems to me that what I give here is closer to the truth of humanity than anything else I have done."
