Classical Sociological Theory
Classical Sociological Theory: Rediscovering the Promise of Sociology is the product of more than 60 years of our undergraduate and graduate teaching experiences in classical sociological theory. Here, we are investigating a topic of study that we continue to work on passionately and which we think is still underexplored, and we believe that the text you have in hand can create a similar passion in students and those working on classical theory, as well as reveal the basic ideas of the male and female founders of sociology. Undergraduate and graduate students attempting to learn classical sociological theory often find themselves in a confusing and bewildering mass of ideas that lack any frame of reference or common theme. In our text, these limitations are overcome in various ways.
Our collective teaching experience in classical sociological theory has shown that in attracting and sustaining students' interest in the work of complex theorists, first and foremost presenting the theorist in question as a person as well as a serious scholar and that virtually all the founders of sociology, men and women, were and are deeply morally concerned with their social worlds. It made us realize that it is effective to show that taking such initiatives bothers very few people.
