Consumer Society
Baudrillard, one of the important philosophers of our age, discusses the distorted understanding of consumption in this book.
In the consumer society, where the distinction between real needs and fake needs disappears, the individual believes that purchasing consumer goods and displaying them brings social privilege and prestige. Thus, a general logic of social differentiation emerges. The need is no longer a need for an object, but a need for differentiation. The consumer is directed to purchase the entire system of goods and services, not individual objects; In this process, while he believes that he distinguishes himself socially from others, he also integrates with the consumer society. Therefore, consuming becomes a necessity for the individual. In this sense , consumption is not a free activity of the individual.
On this theoretical basis, Baudrillard analyzes the consumer society in all its aspects, from daily shopping to luxury consumption, from body care to sexuality , from advertising to Pop Art and the resting styles of individuals. He adds that opposition to this extreme labor and consumption pressure emerges in unexpected forms, for example, as chronic fatigue or irrational violence, and that this opposition will find brand new, unpredictable forms .
