Correspondence 1912 - 1942
Author: Stefan Zweig, Frederike Zweig
Stefan Zweig, one of Europe's most delicate writers; a real cultural humanist, humanist. Art in general and literature in particular are indispensable. A sensitive spirituality, a look loaded with love, and a mind that seeks equity can be considered as the elements that define Zweig's existence. For Zweig, producing artists has to work harder. Time is limited. The tension between what can be fit into a lifetime and what cannot fit into it also influenced Zweig. But in the case of Zweig, there is another focus that limits time: the political developments of the period. When the Nazis come to power, Zweig is displaced from his homeland and leaves his country, never to return. His letters reveal the pain of this abandonment process, reflecting the gradual decline of hope, the collapse of faith in culture from inside and outside, the deepening disappointments of a writer, and the breakdown of a life that ends in suicide. When it becomes impossible to return home, devastating unrest arises and being "honourable" becomes more important than ever: However, the uneasy days we are living in now seem to last longer. I will also change my behavior. I left Salzburg those days because my house was searched, and I will not return there again because I am honorable... Zweig's letters are powerful texts that bring together the reader with the pain and breaking points as well as the sparkles of joy in the artist's life.
