Published in 1965, Cosmos is Witold Gombrowicz's last testamentary novel and also his most serious and versatile one. Two young people, who meet by chance in a holiday resort near the Carpathian Mountains and want to have a peaceful holiday away from daily life, rent a room in a family-run hostel. However, they witness a strange and frightening incident on the way. Far from resting, the young people, who are increasingly drawn into the strange behavior and psychological problems of the members of the family that runs the hostel, find themselves in an existential and risky questioning as they try to make sense of what they are experiencing. Cosmos is a dark, absurd - and extremely serious! - semi-detective novel, based on classical film noir motifs, but dealing with the slipperiness of language, this joke called 'freedom', and man's effort to bring order to chaos in a life driven by sexuality and psychological problems.

“There are also fake novels belonging to another genre, like Gombrowicz's, which are, in a way, evil mechanisms. Although Gombrowicz has in-depth knowledge of psychoanalysis, Marxism and similar subjects, he keeps his distance. In this way, he creates objects that cancel themselves at the very stage of construction – thus creating a model of the novel that can be both analytical and materialist.” JEAN-PAUL SARTRE
