The Crimean War (1853-56) is a decisive turning point in Ottoman history as well as in European history, but it has mostly been studied and analyzed from the European perspective. Industrial inventions that revolutionized the art of war, such as steam and armored warships, railways, telegraphs and long-range rifles, were first widely used in the Crimean War; For the first time, war correspondents, the brand new invention of the camera, and the mass media included the war in the lives of the public behind the front. The Crimean War and the Ottomans, written by Candan Badem by making deep use of previously unused Ottoman and Russian archival sources and existing literature in Western languages, focuses on the impact of this war on the Ottoman state and society. Producing new and original views on the financial, social and political effects of the war, Badem underlines the importance of the Ottomans as both actors and victims. In addition to examining the situation of Ottoman and European public opinion and the diplomatic, economic and political reasons for the war, the work also includes a critical evaluation of the voluminous literature on the subject.
