Salahaddin was on the hill. Above him he stood beneath the caliph's black flag and his own golden eagle banner: they could see the golden shine of the armor around his torso and the white veil around his head to protect it from the sun, and the yellow jackets of his personal bodyguards, the mamluks. The blue waters of Galilee, shining brightly under the sun, seemed to mock them more bitterly than their enemies. Burning Tiberias offered them neither hope nor help. Even if a messenger managed to break through the infidels' lines, no reinforcements could arrive. Worse than that, they would find neither food nor water. They had relied on the warehouses in Cresson, and if not that, those in Tiberias.
