Çiçeklerin Kültürü
Jack Goody is one of the leading anthropologists and historians of the 20th century. The researcher, who is seen as one of the important representatives of the Annales School, has a special place with his writing style that not only pays careful attention to details, but also expresses them in historical context.
"The Culture of Flowers", based on Jack Goody's travels throughout his life and the notes he kept, presents us with a wide cultural universe created by the synthesis of similarities and differences in different societies. In this universe, there are not only flower names and classifications lined up one after the other. The various forms taken by flowers in Judaic, Christian and Islamic cultures are one of the main themes of this work. On the other hand, in this universe, we witness how the now forgotten Pagan flower cult functions, as opposed to the blood cult of monotheistic religions, and how this transformation takes place over time. With this research by Goody, we have the opportunity to look once again at the Iconoclast period, which had a profound impact on Western thought as well as Christian art, from a face we have never witnessed before, from the world of flowers.
"The Culture of Flowers" features a detailed examination of the meanings of flowers in religious symbolism, as well as their role in civil life and the historical development of this role. Goody, who follows the movement of flower use in the civilian world, from rituals to gardens, from crowns to bouquets, traces the verbal culture that always remains in the backyard of the scientific world. He includes in his historiography a vocabulary that will disappear in the field of oral culture, from his casual conversations in the markets to the narratives of village elders.
Jack Goody's study, which works as if chatting with a friend and at the same time does not compromise on scientific consistency, welcomes us to an area that is far from our cultural horizon, both with its subject and method.
