Cynic Philosophy Fragments Book Description Antisthenes (ca. 445-365 BC): Antisthenes, a student of Socrates, is one of the two philosophers thought to be the founders of Cynic philosophy. However, there are many sources in ancient literature that do not consider Antisthenes a Cynic, but state that he was a proto-philosopher who bridged the gap between Socrates and the Cynics. Diogenes (ca. 412-323 BC): He was a student of Diogenes Antisthenes of Sinope, one of the founders of Cynic philosophy, and the most famous philosopher of this doctrine. Diogenes, the son of Treasurer Hikesios, was reportedly exiled from the city because he "devalued the state money" handed over to his father. Plato described Diogenes as "crazy Socrates" because of his excesses arising from Cynic philosophy. No works of Antisthenes and Diogenes have survived to this day, their lives and thoughts are known thanks to direct or indirect quotations in secondary sources.
