Damn the River of Time is the last published novel of Norwegian author Per Petterson. In this novel, we learn the story of Arvid Jansen, a man who could not find what he was looking for in life or who lost what he found, who could not consolidate his place in the world, who always hesitated and faltered, from his own narration. While Arvid remembers the past piece by piece, his life slowly becomes clear in our minds: His childhood, where he was deprived of the love and attention he needed; his youth, where he left university for his ideals, worked as a worker in a factory, and found the shelter he had always sought in love; his depressed years of adulthood, when he was on the verge of divorce and learned that his mother had stomach cancer.
