Dark City: A Stranger Things Novel
It was Christmas 1984 in Hawkins.
Police Chief Jim Hopper only wishes for a quiet first Christmas with Eleven, but Eleven has other plans. Despite Hopper's objections, he brought a box from the basement with the word "New York" written on it and began asking questions that were difficult to answer. Why did Hopper leave Hawkins all those years ago? What did “Vietnam” mean? And why didn't he ever talk about New York?
Even if he chose to fight an army of demogorgons rather than confront his past, Hopper realized he couldn't escape the truth any longer. So he started talking about his experiences in New York before his whole life changed...
It was the summer of 1977 in New York.
Hopper had returned home from the Vietnam War. He started working as a detective in the New York Police Department to continue his civilian life with his young daughter and wife. But when a suspicious federal agent shows up at the police station and seizes a file of brutal unsolved murders, Hopper will take matters into his own hands and risk everything to get the truth.
Soon Hopper infiltrated New York's fearsome gangs. However, just as he was about to solve the murders, a power outage that plunged the entire city into darkness would make Hopper face challenges he had never experienced before.
“Before I became chief of the Hawkins Police Department, I was a cop in New York; "More accurately, I was a detective, working in the homicide unit."
El tried to say the unfamiliar word by moving her lips.
“Oh, yeah,” said Hopper. “'Murder' means killing.”
El's eyes went wide.
Hopper sighed as he wondered if he had just opened Pandora's box.
“Anyway, in the summer of 1977, a very strange thing happened…”
