Death of a Lady
Peride Celal's two long stories that "come closest to the truth".
Death of a Lady, the beginning of everything. A suicide. The poor end of the rich life. The Lady's challenge to her children, a final lesson... A funeral ceremony: A scene where the "ruthlessness of the bourgeois rich" is exhibited. A showdown and "share fight" game where the secrets of family members are revealed... Is it just a game? Perhaps it is a reflection of the brutal reality in which the mentality and feelings of all those below, from the Lady's cook to her driver, emulate those above, and their existential fears recur. So what determines everything from our lives to our conscience?
The island is a paradise to hide in that invites people to its solitude. The oasis that brings with it the defeat of everything: A huge void and a few birds that have no role other than being hope in the vastness where they shrink. It is the place of the loneliness that cannot fit into the canvases of a painter who keeps looking at his palette to avoid seeing his defeat. The cry "I didn't give up, I'm resisting" keeps echoing in his head.
But the price? A woman who is pushed into another loneliness among the crowds of the city. A woman resisting the theft of her love. A woman without Ada, who pays for being a free woman with her unhappiness. She goes to the island to talk about her daughter's future with her husband, who made it easier for her to leave. But his past follows him.
The story called "Island" was adapted into a movie by Süreyya Duru in 1988.
