Flaubert began to note the clichés and generally accepted mistakes that 19th-century French society, especially the bourgeoisie, encountered as it was always disturbed by prejudices and inconsistencies, starting from the 1850s. These notes take shape, first into the second volume of his unfinished novel, Bilirbilmezler, and then into the Dictionary of Accepted Opinions. Flaubert died before finishing this work, which he planned to shake society deeply, and the book was compiled from his working notes and published for the first time in 1913. Designed in dictionary format, the book consists of articles on almost every subject, from health to literature, from history to politics, in alphabetical order. This work, which Flaubert wrote in a critical and humorous style to condemn the stereotypes that haunt society, continues to maintain its validity in the 21st century.
