Dimdim - Kurdish Heroic Epic
The Dimdim epic, also known as Xanê Çengzêrîn (The Golden Handed Khan), is based on a real uprising that took place in Iranian Kurdistan in the 17th century. The center of the uprising was Dimdım castle located in the Mergever region. After long years of wandering, the Kurdish Khan went to the Shah of Iran and asked for a piece of land the size of an oxhide in return for his services and built a very strong castle there. The Khan becomes stronger, declares his sovereignty, and becomes at odds with the Shah. The Shah of Iran sends armies to the Dimdim castle and the castle is surrounded. The Kurds resisted this siege for 7 years together with Emir Khan. The Khan asks for help from the Turkish sultan and the Kurdish tribes.
We present the original text of 6 variants of the Dimdım epic, compiled from different regions in different periods, prepared as a doctoral thesis by Ordixanê Celil, who has done important studies on Kurdish folklore, together with the Turkish version.
