Diyarbakir from the Ottoman Empire to the Present
The feature of the Islamic city as a city of differences, which has been ignored in modern times, is a feature that should be at the center of Islamic city theories. The main issue that needs to be underlined here is that the Islamic city is not just a Muslim city. As in the case of Diyarbakır/Amid, the city is both a Christian and a Muslim city. Ethnically, it is an Assyrian, Armenian, Kurdish and Turkish city. As an Islamic city, Diyarbakır is dominated by a traditional understanding in which all these religious and ethnic elements find something of their own and embrace the city.
It should not be forgotten that the fundamental element that brings all these together is the understanding that sees all multiplicities and differences as a manifestation of the unity of Allah or the idea of monotheism. This is also the result of the understanding that finds unity in multiplicity. The main thing here is the difference. Intervening in difference is an attempt to assume a godly role. Within the framework of this approach, the coexistence of differences is the most distinctive feature of the Islamic city.
