Duvarcı Ustası Don Gesualdo
Don Gesualdo, the Bricklayer , is the masterpiece of Giovanni Verga, one of the masters of Italian literature. In the novel, set in Sicily during the Risorgimento period in the first half of the 19th century, Verga tells the drama of a former bricklayer who "crowns" his rise in the social ladder by acquiring wealth by marrying the daughter of a poor but noble family.
The noble class, now moribund, is struggling for the privileges it has. The emerging bourgeoisie is trying to free itself from the tutelage of the old aristocracy. While the footsteps of the revolutionary rebellions of 1820 and 1848 can be heard in the background, the opportunistic people who think of nothing but looking after their own interests are devoid of moral and human values. Verga successfully conveys local experiences with her concise narrative that adds a lyrical flavor to reality. Don Gesualdo, the Bricklayer , published in 1889, was translated into English in 1928 by DH Lawrence, one of the great writers of English literature.
