Drift
When the shadow of death falls on our faces, life insistently wants to give us a chance to live, it warns us in various ways and tests us again and again.
The unnamed narrator of Drifting is a supporter of an organization that seemingly operates like a civil society organization. On the way back from a trip, he drifts under the influence of first an uncanny person he meets on the plane, then a charismatic taxi driver resembling a prophet, and even indescribable powers in the sky and on earth. The narrator, who travels to towns swallowed by large companies in Turkey and from Russia to England, from Greece to Germany in order to provide resources for the organization, on the one hand enters into a deep reckoning with his leader about the purpose of founding the organization. On the other hand, he tries to give meaning to his own life by supporting lonely, eccentric and elusive young people, and to cure his deep disappointment, the feeling of homelessness and hunger for love specific to our time.
Latife Tekin, in her simultaneous publication of Drifting and Manves City, holds a mirror up to these cruel and boorish days of Turkey. Reaching out to each other with Manves City, Drifting is the novel of new ways of struggling against the ongoing wholesale destruction, of desperate adults, of abandoned, poor, isolated youth and their efforts to build a new life, to hold on while drifting.
