GOETHE AS A DIVAN POET!

Ötüken introduces the readers to the East and West Divan, one of the most distinguished works of world literature. The East-West Divan, which is considered to be one of the most mature fruits of contemplation of the great German thinker and poet Goethe, is considered, together with Faust, as one of the two peaks of perfection that complement each other. Despite Faust's worldwide fame and numerous studies and publications about him, the East-West Court unfortunately remained far from the attention of Turkish intellectuals and was not thought about properly. However, East-West Divan is based on a very interesting Eastern tradition: Goethe wrote this great work as a reference to many Muslim poets, statesmen and wits, especially classical Islamic poets such as Hafız, Şeyh Sadi, Nizâmî and Mevlana. He evaluated many classical Islamic poets, statesmen, artists and thinkers in the language of classical oriental poetry, and tried to introduce them to the West with their works and styles of contemplation; In this respect, the East and West Divan is a guide for us to understand not only the east and the west, but also Classical Islamic contemplation and culture.

Senail Özkan, who translated the work into Turkish, introduces Goethe's understanding of religion, worldview, philosophy, contemplation, his view of the East and Islam, and especially his relationship with classical Islamic thought, poetry and culture, to the Turkish reader with his extensive and remarkable introduction at the beginning of the book. ; In this introduction, the inspiration and sources from which the poems in the East-West Divan were written were investigated, and the meanings and interpretations of the metaphors and codes preferred by Goethe were explained in a comparative manner by referring to the main sources.

We believe that the East-West Court, which has surprisingly remained away from the attention of the Turkish cultural world for more than two hundred years, will receive the attention it deserves, and we are proud to present this important work to Turkish lore.
