Frances Shore, a cartographer, comes to Saudi Arabia with her husband because of his job. The British couple settles into the flat the company rented for them on Gazza Street. But the Kingdom is a dark labyrinth where women are kept under house arrest, governed by bribes behind closed doors, and working foreigners think of nothing but drink and money. While Frances, trying to adapt to the foreign, oppressive Muslim culture, gradually loses her identity and her female identity in the apartment she is trapped in, the sounds she hears from the empty apartment upstairs bring with them a storm of violence and disaster that will suddenly turn her life upside down.

"Frances was always looking at the outer appearance of the city, but the inner city that one builds in one's mind is more important. It is where the temple of possibilities rises without your knowledge, and is not subject to the control of planners."

"The Middle Eastern version of the Heart Twist."
-Time Out-

"A shocking nightmare in the style of Orwell."
-Literary Review-

"A story where hidden evil makes its presence felt at every moment."
-The New York Times Book Review-

"A brave, honest, uncompromising novel."
-San Francisco Chronicle-
