The fog was thickening moment by moment, then suddenly rising as if it were about to lift, and the street and passing cars could be seen. Clara was walking on the street, in the fog. The words around her were getting more distant and shrill, like the voices on the telephone. Without fear, almost without any expectations, the final exam came to her mind.
Instead of preparing for the final exams, The Exam is the adventure of Juan, Clara and their friends who wander through the misty streets of Buenos Aires as the weather darkens, in squares full of surprises, in bars and cafes where jazz and fresh ideas resonate together.
Shortly after writing The Exam in 1950, Cortázar moved from Buenos Aires to Paris, where he would spend the rest of his life. The novel's first encounter with the reader did not take place until 1986, after the author's death. In addition to being an experimental narrative in which Cortázar sows the seeds of many of his ideas, from Hopscotch to his other stories, Exam also offers a critical view of Argentine society of the period.
