We have previously published Todorov's Introduction to Poetics in Metis Criticism. This time, we include Fantastic, in which he applied the method he described there to a literary genre.

Fantasy is one of the most typical and successful applications of structuralist poetics. The starting point of the book is fantasy as a literary genre, not certain narratives that are described as fantastic. Thus, the literary genre becomes a subject of study defined by its difference from other neighboring genres, rather than as an autonomous category whose meaning is hidden within itself. This approach is in harmony with the most fundamental determination of structuralism: A cultural phenomenon gains its meaning only within a series or matrix determined by differences.

It is a masterpiece that analyzes the texts of authors such as Hoffmann, Balzac, Poe, Maupassant, Henry James and Kafka, and distinguishes the basic features of the fantasy narrative genre, while allowing the reader to become more acquainted with the possibilities and efficiency of structuralist criticism...
