Fathers and Sons
Describing the generational conflict between the older generation and the nihilist youth, Fathers and Sons focuses on a turbulent period in Russia with the character of Bazarov.
Young Arkady Petrovich's father cannot recognize his naive son, who has returned from school: The friend he brought with him, young Bazarov, who completely rejects established principles, authority and beliefs, has poisoned his son's mind with his own perverted ideas. This young man, who wants to destroy the landownership and all the traditional values of Russian society and defines himself as a nihilist, terrifies Arkady's Westernist father and uncle. In Fathers and Sons, which deeply shook Russian readers and critics when it was published in 1862, Turgenev creates an extraordinary early example of the "angry young men" that we frequently encounter in literature, with Bazarov.
"At that time, I felt that something new was being born; I was seeing new people, but I didn't know how they would act, what was expected from them. I would either keep silent or write what I knew. I chose the latter."
-Turgenev-
"Fathers and Sons is not only one of Turgenev's best novels, but also one of the brightest novels of the 19th century."
