Neriman, who studied oud in the traditional Turkish section of Darülelhan (Conservatory), has been living in the Fatih district since the age of fifteen with her father, Faiz Bey, who loves the Eastern culture and is proud of belonging to it. She has been engaged for seven years to Şinasi, whom she met in this district, who is very similar to her father and who studied kemençe at Darülelhan. The whole neighborhood is waiting for this engagement relationship, which pushes the limits of tolerance, to end with marriage. However, Macit, whom Neriman met at Darülelhan, is a Westerner who has ingrained himself in her. Life awakens the desire to live. Neriman envies the glittering lifestyle lived in Beyoğlu and Harbiye and begins to hate the environment he lives in, his houses, his father, Şinasi and even his cat, which he thinks represents the east. Fatih and Harbiye, two districts connected to each other by tram but incompatible, are the fronts of a cultural and mental tension experienced in the same geography. Peyami Safa, the most productive writer of Turkish literature, mirrors the pains of modernization experienced by our society through objects, people, institutions and places in his novel Fatih-Harbiye, which is also the subject of television series.
