Fear of Democracy - September 12 Diary 2
After the September 12 coup of 1980, in the environment of military rule, the "nation of journalists" could not write everything or express their feelings due to pressure and self-censorship.
At that time, I was first the Ankara representative of Cumhuriyet newspaper and then the editor-in-chief.
I started keeping a diary.
I tried to record with all my sincerity in my diary what I could not write down due to the coup. In the years following these diaries, these two books were published: Waking up to the sound of tanks and Fear of democracy.
While keeping my diaries, I sometimes thought I was capturing history while I was living it.
But after a quarter of a century later, while I was browsing through the pages of these books, I saw once again that it is not that easy for a journalist to "catch history while it's happening."
