Korkudan Korkmak
FEARING FEAR
The most recent of the events in front of our eyes, through which they try to console themselves and deceive us, is the headscarf incident. Thirteen years into the twenty-first century, Turkey's statesmen, who consider themselves to be from the European family, have been dealing with the headscarf issue for months: Can university student girls wear headscarves in order not to show their hair, in accordance with Islamic conditions, or not?
Today, girls remove headscarves from their heads. Those who think that this is secularism and Kemalism should know that they are the ones who make our poor girls cover their headscarves and disguise them as medieval women.
You will introduce religion lessons in schools, starting from primary school. You will also educate those who cannot go to school in Quran courses. The number of Imam-Hatip schools will exceed the number of vocational schools. And then the girls you raise with such education will not wear the headscarf! It is impossible for our girls, who were taught in those religion classes to believe that Adam (that is, man) was created from his rib, not to cover the headscarf.
Those who educate girls in a way that makes it compulsory to cover the headscarf and try to prevent them from wearing the headscarf on the grounds of Kemalism are reactionary to a much more extreme extent than the headscarf. We must try to understand why they remain silent in the face of (reactionism) events.
