Feminine Piety
The "measures" of religiosity have been discussed in terms of women's identity and body for a long time. The struggle between Islamism and its opponents revolves around determining the status and attire of women. How does this situation affect the way religion is understood and experienced? Where are religious women as subjects in this struggle, what are they "doing"? While Zehra Yilmaz searches for answers to these questions, she also takes into account the impact of Turkey's agenda, as well as global debates, especially Islamic feminism debates. It analyzes the meaning gained by women's religiosity and the transformation it has undergone, both at the theoretical level and "in the field", based on in-depth interviews. The author draws attention to the effects of the fact that the fields of economy and politics are reserved only for men, while the fight over the content of religiosity continues over women. It addresses the tension of this dual process that brings women into the public sphere while limiting them. She examines religious women's initiatives and associations, as well as the "No headscarved candidate, no votes" campaign, in the light of this tension. We see that one consequence of the role assigned to women in the struggle around religion and of female religiosity as a social experience is the feminization of religion. This book offers a nuanced description of this phenomenon.
