The Feylis, a branch of the Kurds, live in a wide area along the Tigris River in Iraq from Khanaqin in the north to Basra in the south. Political consciousness among the Feylis manifested itself as early as the 3rd century of the Hijra and they established powerful emirates and governments in the west of Iran. In addition, the Muzafferi emirate in Erbil and the Baban emirate in Sulaymaniyah were established by the Feylis. While the Iranian Kurds established independent governments and emirates from the Persians and the Iraqi Kurds from the Arabs, this political and tribal consciousness did not develop much among the Feyli Kurds, who lived far from the Kurdish regions and were in contact with the Arabs. Despite this, they managed to create a rich cultural and political literature in both Iraq and Iran throughout history. Today, many Feyli Kurds continue to play an active role in the civil society and political activities of these countries.
This book, written by Prof. Dr. Kadri Yıldırım before his death and later prepared for publication by his son Abdurrahman Yıldırım, is one of the rare academic studies on the Feyli Kurds. The most important feature that distinguishes the work from its counterparts is that it has comprehensive and satisfying content on the origin, language, history, geography, politics, culture, literature and current situation of the Feyli.
