Fifth Discipline

We are accustomed to dividing problems into parts and dividing the world from a very young age. Although this enables us to deal with complex tasks and issues more easily, we pay a large, invisible price in return. From now on, we no longer see the consequences of our actions, and we lose the ability to connect them to a further stage. When we try to see the picture as a whole, we try to put the pieces back together in our minds and sort and arrange all the pieces. However, this is a futile effort; we cannot reach the real image by combining the pieces of a broken mirror. The tools and ideas presented in the Fifth Discipline are intended to destroy the illusion that the world is created from separate, unrelated forces. The day we give up this illusion, we can establish "learning organizations". In such organizations, people constantly expand their capacities to achieve the results they want. New and enthusiastic ways of thinking are nurtured, and collective aspirations are not curbed. People are constantly learning how to learn together. As an issue of Fortune magazine put it, "forget your old, worn-out ideas about leadership. The most successful company of the 1990s will be something called the learning organization." Our ability to learn faster than our competitors may be our only competitive advantage. As the world becomes more interconnected and more complex and dynamic aspects predominate in the business world, work must become more "student".
