Forbidden Love
Aşk-ı Memnu, which is accepted by some researchers as the first "real" novel of Turkish Literature, with the opinion that the Tanzimat novels were deficient in some aspects, was serialized in Servet-i Fünun magazine in 1899-1900 and was first published as a book in 1900.
Although Aşk-ı Memnu is quite rich in terms of vocabulary, it was simplified by the author in the editions after 1920 due to the abundance of words that are difficult to understand and not commonly used in daily use. A new edition was made in Latin letters in 1939. Halid Ziya made another simplification for this edition, but did not make any changes in style and content. The work, which attracted great attention even when it was serialized, still maintains its popularity and value despite the passage of time and is considered one of the masterpieces of Servet-i Fünun period Turkish literature.
This work, considered one of the author's most important novels, describes a forbidden love in the most striking way. Although the theme of "forbidden love" is a theme encountered in many novels at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, there are few people who can turn it into a work as memorable as Halid Ziya. In the words of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar; “Until Halid Ziya, we have not had a single writer born with the imagination of a novelist. “They are all people who are eager to write novels or stories.”
“He would shake off this treacherous thing that wanted to deceive him, he would not die; This beautiful, young, exquisite woman would live; Then suddenly, in front of the cracking door that was ready to break, a wound came to the strength of his wrist, as if a force bent him, defeated him, finally that black mouth twisted and curled, with the treachery of a snake, in the darkness, that hand found the point where it ached with the pain of love.
