The game little Ernst played with a spool wrapped in rope when he was one and a half years old would make him the most famous child in the history of psychoanalysis, because his grandfather Sigmund Freud, who followed him, was quick to make sense of the game and add concepts such as repetition compulsion and death drive to his psychoanalysis theory. Published exactly one hundred years ago and partly inspired by this children's game, "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" is also Freud's most personal text. For Freud, the writing process was a period full of losses, especially the sudden death of his daughter, and the possibility of his own cancer coming to the fore. Perhaps Freud created his own reel game while writing this text.

Instead of discussing theoretical propositions in this book, I preferred to read and interpret “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” by drawing parallels with Sigmund Freud's private life. Thus, I wanted to emphasize that beyond being a theorist, a clinician and the founder of science, he was also a husband, a father and a grandfather, in short, a human being.
