  • Diaspora formation and transnational relations among Kurds in France and Sweden
  • Ji English: Fahriye Adsay
  • This study is a comparative research on the ongoing process of shaping the Kurdish diasporic identity from a one-dimensional, victimization-related Kurdish diasporic identity into a more qualified, dynamic and active structure among the Kurds in the Marseille region in France and the Stockholm region in Sweden. The study examines the multitude of institutional and transnational arrangements, asabiye networks, radio and television broadcasts and cyberspace “online” participations, cultural and literary activities, and other similar diasporic and trajectories that are necessary elements for the development of transnational citizenship experience among diaspora Kurds in both countries. It goes beyond the experience of pain and trauma and the sense of victimization to describe.
The research argues that Kurds in France and Sweden envision different diasporic discourses and also choose different forms of action. Due to their uniform social background and the exclusivism of the French political environment, Kurds in the Marseille region maintain a distinctly victimized diaspora narrative and have limited cross-border citizenship action. Because the Kurds in Sweden are socially and politically diverse and live in a more advantageous political environment, they not only maintain a more flexible diaspora discourse but also have a more developed cross-border citizenship experience than the Kurds in the Marseille region.

From Victimized Diaspora to Cross-Border Citizenship? The formation of diaspora and transnational relations among the Kurds in France and Sweden Ji Îngîlîzî: Fahriye Adsay This study aims to develop a more qualified, dynamic and active structure from the one-dimensional, victimization-related Kurdish diasporic identity among the Kurds in the Marseille region in France and the Stockholm region in Sweden. It is a comparative study of an ongoing process towards its proper form.
