In Heart of Darkness, Conrad describes the experience he had in the Congo in 1890, which shook him deeply. Kurtz, the “hero” of the work, which is considered a classic of modernism today, says “Horror! Horror!" His cry reflects the disappointment and psychological shock experienced by the author, who started his journey with great hopes, in this country. Like all great works of literature, Heart of Darkness has, over time, gone beyond the text its creator intended to write. Although the novella, published in 1899, was a product of the time in which it was written and described the imperialist exploitation of Europeans in Africa, it inspired debates that lasted for generations and continue to the present day. These discussions, which still keep the text alive today, are modernism's discovery of the self, the search for new forms of expression, the legacy of colonialism, the construction of gender, the ecological consequences of imperialism and modernization, etc. it goes around.
