Henry James, one of the world-renowned masters of the novel art, wrote nearly twenty novels, more than a hundred stories, plays, criticisms and published travel books throughout his long writing life. He gained great respect for the novel genre in England and America with his works. In addition, Henry James is an author who deserves to be one of the pioneers of world literature with the literary innovations he introduced and the theoretical foundations he developed...
In Henry James and the Art of the Novel, Ünal Aytür examines this great legacy that Henry James left us through his works, and analyzes his understanding of art, his concern for form and method, and his narrative technique with full competence.
In an article about Gustave Flaubert, Henry James says that Flaubert was born a novelist, lived a novelist, and died a novelist. These words are also valid for James himself, because he is a writer who devoted his whole life to the novel and prioritized his art above everything else. Indeed, he is not only a great novelist, but also a very good critic and an extremely sound theorist. Many of the basic concepts on which novel criticism and theory are based today, especially in England and America, are concepts developed by him. Among these, the concept of point of view has a special and important place in James' understanding of the novel.
Henry James set an example for modernist writers in terms of limiting the subject in the novel. The reflective consciousness method that James developed to show together the events in the outside world and their effects on people's inner world is a very suitable and natural method for such a limitation. James also tried to limit the number of people he discussed in his novels in order to give the necessary importance to the inner worlds of his characters.
James, who believes that every novelist should find the novel form that best suits his own purposes and his own view of life, has carefully considered the characteristics of each subject he deals with throughout his years of writing, and has meticulously researched the methods that would best suit these characteristics. The notebooks he left behind and the prefaces he wrote to the New York edition of his novels are clear evidence of this situation. In both his notebooks and prefaces, James is not concerned with the subjects of his stories and novels, but with the problem of how and with what method he will tell them. In this respect, especially the prefaces are documents that reveal in detail the form of a novel suitable for the author's own abilities, personality and view of life. They have a very important place in the field of novel theory.
