Two great writers of our age, Paul Auster and JM Coetzee, who live in overseas countries, wrote a book based on their correspondence.

The letters of Auster and Coetzee, which were sent back and forth between America and Australia for more than two years, contain the feelings, thoughts, observations and very interesting observations of the two writers on many subjects, from art to politics, from sports to wars, from economy to human relations.

I was thinking about friendships, how they are formed - why some of them last so long, even longer than the passionate bonds of which they are sometimes (mischaracteristically) interpreted as an unrevealed form.

Dear John,

This is an issue I've thought about long and hard over the years. I cannot say that I have developed a coherent view of friendship, but in response to your letter (which triggered a whirlwind of thoughts and memories in my head), perhaps now is the time to develop that view.
