Hilal-i Ahdar Society Hilal-i Ahdar Society Book Description: On March 5, 1920, which coincided with the most difficult times of the Armistice Period, Dr. Hilal-i Ahdar, founded in Istanbul by Mazhar Osman (Usman) and his friends, is one of the largest societies founded by the Turkish Nation. The Turkish Grand National Assembly's enactment of the Prohibited Alcohol Law shortly after its establishment became one of the most important supporting points in Hilal'i Ahdar's fight against alcohol. This situation continued until the Prohibition of Alcohol Law was actually abolished in 1924. After this date, the Society, which lost its legal guarantee but did not lose its determination to fight against alcohol, started to enlighten the public mostly through meetings and press. Hilal-i Ahdar changed its name to Green Crescent at its congress held in 1929. The Society, which used this name until January 22, 1936, took the name Green Crescent after this date and still continues its activities. (From the Promotional Bulletin) PX0000018210
