History of English Literature - Hardcover
We can divide the history of English literature into ten periods. Although there is no way to determine exactly on which date a literary period began and on which date it ended, it is undeniable that there were certain changes in the field of literature in some periods.
1) With the transition of oral literature from the Old English period to written literature, approximately in the VII century. It begins in the 11th century with the Norman invasion (1066), which was a turning point in English history. It ends towards the middle of the century.
2) Middle English period, covering the entire Middle Ages, starting from the 15th century. It lasts up to a century.
3) The Renaissance or Elizabethan age takes its name from Queen Elizabeth, who reigned between 1558 and 1603. Since King James of Scotland ascended to the throne upon Elizabeth's death and James' Latin name was Jacobus, the last forty years of the Elizabethan age are also called the Jacobean age. This period ended in 1642, when the Puritan sect took power under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell and established the Commonwealth, that is, the Republic.
4) The Commonwealth period covers the period between 1642 and 1660.
5) The Restoration period begins with the accession of Charles II, the son of Charles I, who was executed by the Republicans, to the throne, that is, with the restoration of the monarchy, and ends in the 18th century. It lasts until the beginning of the century.
6) Neo-Classical Age, XVIII. It lasts from the beginning of the century until approximately 1770. Because Queen Anne reigned between 1702 and 1714, the beginning of this period is also called the Queen Anne Era. Another name for this period is the Augustan Age, as the most famous people of Latin literature lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus, and the English poets and writers who took them as an example considered themselves as important as the classical writers of Rome and adopted the adjective "Augustan".
7) XVIII. It would be more appropriate to consider the Pre-Romantic Era, which covers the last thirty years of the century and prepared the Romantic movement, together with Romanticism.
8) The Romantic Age begins in 1798 with Wordsworth and Coleridge publishing The Lyrical Ballads and continues in the 19th century. It lasts until almost the middle of the century.
9) The Victorian age takes its name from a queen. Since Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837 and died in 1901, this period is the 20th century. It lasts until the beginning of the century.
10) XX. 20th century literature is perhaps the period that will be of most interest to readers who do not choose English literature as their specialization, but are generally literature enthusiasts. However, since the values are not truly established and it is not clear which writer or poet will live on and which will fade away, I intend to confine myself to discussing only those writers whom we truly believe will live, taking being born before 1900 as a prerequisite.
