Let us greet together the dawn of a better age in which the spirit, which has hitherto been the prey of externalities, can return within itself, come back to itself, and gain space and space for a kingdom of its own...

This is how Hegel addressed his audience in the opening speech of the lecture in Heidelberg in October 1816 It started with calling out; The Philosopher, who conveyed with great enthusiasm the hope he felt for his own time and the future, heralded that it was time for the mind, drowned in the insignificant interests of daily life, to withdraw from externality into itself. The task of being the guardian of the ashes of the sacred flame that was about to go out, and of burning and destroying the shallowness and emptiness that covered thought with the heated heat of this fire, was now given to philosophy. Being had no power to resist this powerful actor of the search for knowledge; on the contrary, it had to reveal its own riches and depths to the eyes of thought and give pleasure to the soul.

I don't know which being and existence offers itself so easily to the thought that wants to take possession of itself; What truth accepts the sovereignty of thought with such joy? Why should the truth, which has long been accustomed to being bent and despised by thought and seen as inadequate by thought, present its own truth as a gift to this ancient "enemy" in Hegel's time? And who is the hero of the 2500-year history of philosophy? On the altar of which god was the blood of reality shed? Is it Plato, whose relentless pursuit of the Idea ended tragically, or Parmenides, who whispered the truth of the One into his ear? Is it Aristotle who gave up the ideal of ontological unity in his first move and turned to the difference of existing things? why not Plotinus who made the world a world; Maybe it is the whole Middle Ages looking for clues for the truth of Being in God's mysterious creation, or Giordano Bruno, who destroyed the god of the Middle Ages with his scream of "infinite universe" and whose ashes were scattered into the air in Campo dei Fiori; Well, don't Descartes, Spinoza and Kant, who oscillate in the tension between substance and subject, deserve the glory of heroism as much as the names above? Who identified Thought and Being in the parade of philosophies and philosophers in world history?

One of Hegel's differentia specifica is right here: The History of Philosophy does not give heroism to anyone for the necessity that the disorder of thought coming from "nothing" has gained in the form of Spirit. What is important is not an eclectic description of which philosophers put forward which ideas, but how Thought reveals philosophers and philosophies under the tight relationality of their determinations in history. Philosophy - as a Concept - seeks its right and in this way examines all the mediations it has passed through; He makes it similar to himself and establishes himself in it. Hegel's History of Philosophy tells only this throughout its long adventure.
