History of Power 1 Book Description This book is the first part of a four-volume study dealing with the nature of power in human societies. In this volume, Michael Mann defines social power in terms of domination over four basic resources: economic, ideological, military and political. It examines the interrelationships between these sources within the framework of the history of power and in a narrative language, from the Neolithic Age to the civilizations of the Ancient Near East, from the Classical Mediterranean Age to Medieval Europe, until just before the Industrial Revolution in England. Rejecting the concept of a traditional, monolithic "society", Mann's model consists of a series of overlapping and intersecting networks of power. Mann operationalizes this model by focusing on the logistics of power - how the flow of information, manpower, and goods is controlled in social and geographical space - and thus clarifies many of the "big debates" in sociological theory.
