History of Türkiye 1603-1839 Volume 3
Cambridge University Press has launched a tremendous publishing project under the title Cambridge History of Turkey. The first three volumes of this four-volume history, starting from the end of the 11th century, when the Turks entered Anatolia, describe the establishment of the Ottoman state, which in the 15th and 16th centuries became a powerful empire with enormous lands stretching from the Iranian border in the east to Hungary in the west, to North Africa and the Arabian peninsula in the south. It covers your arrival. The last volume is about the disintegration of the empire after World War I and the history of the modern Turkish state. We are publishing this work in the publishing order of Cambridge University Press, starting with the third volume. This volume covers the III century of the Ottoman Empire. It examines the late period from Mehmed's death in 1603 to the proclamation of the Tanzimat in 1839. This was the period when trade between the empire and Europe flourished, merchants and pilgrims could travel in relative safety except during times of war, and stable and unstable days alternated. However, despite the emphasis on the sultan's role as protector of his faithful and social order, tensions were not lacking between the ruling elite in Istanbul and the subjects in the provinces; The vast expanses of the empire's territory and the less-than-generous natural environment with which its subjects had to contend every day were just two factors that contributed to this tension. The volume's contributors examine the problems faced by provincial rulers, sometimes as they collected taxes and sometimes as they tried to compromise with local notables and soldiers who actually participated in politics. The topics that the chapters focus on include religious and political groups, non-Muslims, women, trade, crafts, life in the Ottoman countryside, as well as music, art, and architecture. Contrary to the traditional and still widespread idea that the post-classical era was a period of stagnation and collapse, the book reveals that the Ottomans achieved many successes in the political, cultural and artistic fields.
