History of Türkiye 4 - Contemporary Türkiye 1908-1980
History of Turkey is the product of a plan created by Oğuz Akkan and Sina Akşin in 1980 and a long period of study and preparation. History of Türkiye consists of 5 volumes. In each volume, the politics, economics, thought, architecture and art histories of the period are examined in separate sections. Volume 1 deals with the Turks before the Ottoman Empire. Volume 2 reviews Ottoman History up to 1600. Volume 3 covers the years 1600-1908. Volume 4 examines the period 1908-1980. Volume 5 covers the period 1980-1995, that is, current Turkey. Sina Akşin created the staff of writers and served as the editor-in-chief. The authors of the Political History departments are Ümit Hassan, Metin Kunt, Sina Akşin, Mete Tunçay, Cemil Koçak, Hikmet Özdemir, Bülent Tanör. Halil Berktay, Suraiya Faroqhi, Korkut Boratav, Zafer Toprak wrote the Economic History sections. History of Thought sections were written by Ümit Hassan, Hüseyin Yurdaydın, Sina Akşin, Selahattin Hilav, Murat Katoğlu. The only author of the Architecture and Art History departments is Ayla Ödekan. Sina Akşin explains the purpose of History of Turkey as follows: "... The history taught in schools and universities in Turkey is generally a superficial history. For students in schools, history is the most unbearable, rote-based, meaningless history." The scores in university history departments, that is, the demand for historiography, are very low. History, in the eyes of many of us, is not an exciting branch of science in which to investigate the truth, but rather a field in which to compile evidence to support certain accepted ideological or political attitudes. We thought that it would perhaps make a modest contribution to saving our country's historiography from its current state of disrepair. "This volume in your hands is an indispensable source for the history of the 1908-1980 period. We believe it will shed light on the complexity of the recent past.
