In Stalin's Russia, The Pit tells the story of the digging of a foundation pit for a gigantic building planned for the workers to live together in the good days of the future – “in Platonov style”, of course. Platonov readers will immediately understand what this means: absurd dialogues, existential questions, the exposure of the gap between the abstract ideals of socialism and concrete practices, naive characters who comically misunderstand the ideology that is constantly being propagated, and an original, “strange”, peerless language.
This novel, which the author completed in 1930 but could only be published in Russia in 1987, is presented with the masterful translation of Günay Çetao Kızılırmak, who also translated Platonov’s other works published in Metis into Turkish.
